Busy Week: Chautauqua Week 3

This week was a busy one! Everyday there were events back to back. From Kwame Alexander hosting varying creators during his Kwame and Friends Week, to the CLSC graduation for over a hundred graduates this summer. I went to concerts, lectures, and more than anything, I was putting steps in running from thing to thing.

This week's usual events included the faculty staff meeting, the literary arts team meeting, and taking a course with Valerie Woods on Adaptation into Films. I enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone in that class, learning about topics that I had never once considered before.

Laufey Night 2, August 2One of the biggest highlights of the week was getting to see Grammy winner Laufey in concert two nights in a row. It was an incredible privilege, and one that I held close to my heart. The performances were completely encapsulating, and beyond lovely. Both nights, Chautauqua’s energy shifted, welcoming a crowd of her supporters who made the town feel like a true summer town. Excitement was high and energy buzzing throughout the air. With the week of events coming up, it was nice to enjoy a night at the symphony with my team; Camille Carter (Graduate fellow), Ayaana Nayak (Literary Arts Assistant) and Liana Lopez (Summer intern).

CLSC Graduates Lining up for Ceremony, August 2 2025

On Sunday this week, we had a vigil of sorts for the graduates of the CLSC book club. It was an interesting event that was nothing I had ever seen before. It was beautiful, calm, and a great celebration for the readers of Chautauqua. This is a space where literature is held at high value, which is refreshing in a technology focused world.

I got to attend my first lunch with a guest author this week with Kevin Nguyen. Author of the novel “My Documents”, was the CLSC speaker of the week. I got to discuss his background of journalism and his intention for writing his novel. It was a more inviting environment to discuss and learn about Nguyen beyond his writing.  After lunch, we had the regular author discussion and book signing. After which I was able to snag a photo with him!

Other events that I got to be a part of is a Poetry reading event where the community was invited to share their favorite poems. My boss, Stephine Hunt shared a beautiful poem. It was the first time that I went to an event like this. It was really great to see all forms of literature be celebrated throughout the week.

I also got the chance to attend a couple lectures and interviews hosted by Kwame. One that stood out to me the most being with Amna Nawaz, a journalist for PBS news. She shared stories that stayed with her, and shared how hope is the one thing we can cling on to. She shared stories and advice on how the individual steps up to help with major events that need strong voices and action.

Overall it's been a hectic week that has yet to end. More events to celebrate the Janis Prize winner are scheduled. And next week, the celebration for Chautauqua’s Prize winner Whale Fall by Elizabeth O’Conner!
